It's that time of year again!

FACE2FACE MAKEUP AWARDS!

Writing up hints, tips and words of 'wisdom' for anyone considering entering Face2Face Awards is a tradition for the for me over the years... but what I write here it may even come in handy for the  'just curious' artists out there.

CATEGORY DEFINITION Modern History

 Makeup throughout history has allowed mankind to decorate, conceal, self-express even celebrate who we are; from ancient Egyptian designs to the rich colour of the 80’s, makeup has helped define who we think we are in whatever time period we have found ourselves in. Makeup is one of mankind’s easiest form of self-expression. Create two Beauty Editorial images that take a 2018 spin on a Makeup period from the past that inspires you.

The BEAUTY EDITORIAL category was created to give artists from around Australia the chance to enter the awards even if they can't attend in person. It is also a win/win situation, because regardless if you win or not...  you have the motivation to create two images for your portfolio.

Once again LAUD MAGAZINE is sponsoring this category, and whilst I wont be there in person in 2018 (as I'm swanning around New York City), Trish (Owner/Publisher of LAUD) will be beaming me in via skype so I can still judge this category!

THINGS I HAVE HEARD FROM THE JUDGES...

You could even call this section: "Things I have heard and/or eavesdropped from the judges"...


This is really nice, but it’s clearly a recreation of *insert famous artists name* work.

Dear Artists,

When you completely copy someone elses work... the chances are quite high considering most of your judges are very well educated in Editorials from the past.

It's not cute to copy hair, makeup, styling, pose, theme all at once. Please use images as reference but put your own, artistic spin all over your work. People will get the reference.

OF COURSE there are crazy coincidences... don't let this be a bee that gets in your bonnet. However, don't completely recreate shoots you have seen. This lacks imagination and imagination is an artists biggest strength.

I can’t tell what is makeup and what is crazy retouching.
— have heard this many, many times.

As a makeup artist, you actually have the right as an artist to ask for, and contribute to selecting the 'selects' and do your own retouch notes. A retouch note could be anything from 'please remove this speck of fallout' to 'insert extra eyelash here where there is a gap... I didn't see on the day'. This makes sure you are completing your work as the makeup artist and any good photographer will know you will want to do this. I have even sat with the photographer whilst they were retouching a shot to say what I would love done (or not done) and it is actually a great experience as the photographer also learns about your makeup style too. For example... many moons ago I used to have a photographer retouch out all my dewy skin as he thought and 'shine' was an error. I don't think that would happen so much in this day and age... however, I was horrified when he told me he thought it was a mistake... and made sense as to why I was thinking the photos looked so over retouched. 

By requesting this you can also prevent any over retouching or manipulation of your work. I have had to request the texture of the skin to come back into a shot before... and even requested for flaws in my makeup application to remain so you can tell it was applied by hand not a computer.

Follow your guts on what you would like to see in the end result.

So many makeup artists I speak to who are in the first few years of their career don't realise they can be (and should be) part of the whole process of an image... especially when it's a beauty shot. Fashion editorials you don't so much have this opportunity and it usually doesn't matter.

I spoke with Beauty Photographer extraordinaire @alanatylerslutsky about what she thought about a Makeup Artists involvement in the beauty retouching decisions... this is what she had to say (with more to come in a future post! )

" Personally, I love having my makeup artist involved in the retouching process. They're trained to see in a different way and can call out small details I may have missed, that will elevate the image. It definately can't hurt to ask the photographer to have imput on the makeup retouch. But be certain to not overstep your bounds, and try not to give 'too' much pushback. Feel them out and see if they're receptive to it. Keep in mind certain photographers have a higher skillcap when it comes to retouching...so while some can easily make the fixes for you, others may not have the ability"

I get what the idea was... but not enough attention is being paid to the finer details.

One of the most common pieces of feedback is this:

Attention to detail.

Here are the most common forms of feedback in the form of advice:

- Make sure your mascara (if used) is all the way to the roots of the lashes.

- Also ensure if you have a heavy eye makeup application that your lashes don't look powdery before shooting. (You can use a small fan or even a angles brush to paint a thin layer of mascara back onto the top of the lashes to make sure the mascara looks prime)

- Make sure the brows have been groomed and brushed. Every time. Just ask Jazz Pampling how much her heart breaks when she can tell the brown have been forgotten.

- If you can't do hair... have a hairstylist come in and style the hair for you. This won't affect judging except will help with 'overall look'.

- Nails! A lot of entries haven't paid attention to nail or even ensured the models hands (if next to the face) is the same colour and texture.


The beauty editorial category is one of the most popular categories at the face2face awards and available to any makeup artist to enter.

final tips:

Choose your Photographer and Model wisely. Be fussy and professional.

Create a mood-board and makeup designs before approaching your team to make sure everyone is on the same page in creating your editorial vision. This is YOUR VISION // YOUR ENTRY

Once you have your editorial vision... only approach photographers who shoot in a style that will suit your vision. IE Don't ask a 'boho beach babe' photographer to shoot macro beauty in a studio if that's not their style. (Unless they want to branch out and you trust they will do an amazing job)

Don't leave your entry to the last minute. You need to give the photographer a chance to retouch the images etc afterwards.

Don't copy anyone elses work. It needs to be said again. Be as original as you can and follow your creative intuition.

You don't need to spend much money if you are styling this yourself. Think outside the box (says the MUA who has styled using pants on the head or a shirt as a turban)

Don't feel shy approaching models or photographers you haven't worked with before. Be confident and clear in your vision before you contact them. The worst that can happen is they say no... and that could be for a variety of reasons. Don't make it mean anything about your artistry. When I first moved to NYC I made a lot of my contacts through messaging people on Instagram.

Take as much time as you need on the day to get your makeup right. Pay attention to the details. The more you do this, the less retouch will be needed and Judges will be able to see this this.

I know I can't cover here the entire width and breadth of the history of makeup across all time periods and cultures that has ever existed in the world in one blog post...
